Description
"THE GARDEN OF LIFE." This is the main title of a volume of "Flowers of Thought on Culture, Conduct, and Character for Every Day in the Year" gathered and arranged by Mr. H. W. Smith (Williams and Norgate).
Mr. Smith believes, with the French philosopher M. J. Guyon, that ''it is good that man should habituate himself to read daily something else than a newspaper or a novel; that he should turn his thoughts now and then to some serious subject of meditation, and dwell upon it."
Hence the present selection. Mr. Smith has laid many writers, from Aristotle downwards, under contribution. Each quotation is arranged under a date and confined to a page and at the head of the page is given a short notice of the author quoted from.
The subjects of the extracts cover a very wide range and contain many thoughts, which should be very helpful to wayfarers along the road of life, although some of the ideas put for ward may not command universal approval.
